El Cielito Supports Baguio's Anti-smoking Campaign
City councilors Erdolfo Balajadia and Antonio Tabora Jr. have
filed an ordinance with the Baguio city government proposing to further improve the quality of Baguio's air.
Stiff penalties await smokers who are found smoking in public utility vehicles, government offices, and public places where people congregate, including but not limited to schools, churches, malls, gyms, transportation terminals, shopping arcades, funeral parlors, cinema houses, and the like. These include a fine starting at PHP500 (US$12) and/or imprisonment of one to six months. Businesses allowing public smoking will be sbjected to a 60-day closure period or a temporary suspension of their business permits.
The ordinance tasks the police force with monitoring busines establishments that sell cigarettes to minors, an act already prohibitd under 2003's Tobacco Regulation Act.
